Psychological Assessment

Psychological assessment is an integral part of treatment at the Behavioral Health Center. Some adolescents come to the BHC following treatment in an acute treatment setting in which they have received a comprehensive psychological evaluation. In such instances the staff of the BHC are able to integrate findings of that evaluation into the child's treatment plan. Often, adolescents come to the BHC without having had a comprehensive evaluation. Many have had some testing at school or through a counselor or physician, but the findings have never been well explained or integrated. Often these children have received multiple different diagnoses and as many different medications. The purpose of the psychological assessment is to clarify diagnosis and to give direction to treatment, decreasing this type of confusion.

The BHC has a licensed psychologist on staff and contracts with psychologists and psychometrists in the community to provide the full range of psychological assessment. Psychological assessment services available include intellectual assessment, academic achievement testing, personality assessment, behavioral assessment, and neuropsychological assessment. Such assessment aids in identifying developmental deficits, learning disabilities, neurological impairments, and personality characteristics contributing to behavior, motivation for change, and best options for treatment. The BHC also carries on an ongoing assessment of the progress of each child, offering an objective appraisal of the progress the child is making in treatment. If the treatment selected is not proving to be effective, changes can be made early.
